Some easy to access help for those struggling -7 Cups

The previous blog post was all about information and education. Today’s post, however, will be covering some resources that can help some of those who are struggling.

One of my favorite resources that I share quite often is called 7 Cups. This site offers free one on one conversations with certified “listeners.” You can choose to be connected with the first available listener or you can browse the short bios of hundreds of listeners to find one that has experience with your particular struggle or find one with good ratings. This website has saved me many a night of tears and heartache from being alone in my dark room alone with my feelings. The service is open 24/7 and is available in many different languages.

7 Cups also has other services that are helpful. It has something that is called “My Growth Path.” Once you are logged into your free account, you can access your Growth Path. The service offers step by step, easy to follow activities and instructions to help you calm down and/or relax from your current struggles. After a few activities you are prompted to answer a few simple questions to personalize your experience. If you do not feel like talking about your specific problems just yet you can always press the “try something else” button which will let you choose from other guided mindfulness and relaxation techniques.

The Growth Path has many components, such as: goal setting, keeping track of days in your streak of self help, “Growth Points”, and many others.

The last service that I will suggest on this wonderful website is the “Talk with a Therapist” option. This option begins with a free trial and then if it is helpful you can opt in to continuing the therapy with a real, licensed therapist. The cost is not cheap but is definitely worth what you get. The cost is “$150/month (the equivalent of $5 a day, compared to $150+ per session in traditional therapy) for unlimited messaging to their therapist. Therapists check messages and reply 1-2 times per day, Monday through Friday, on days that you have messaged them.” Depending on your country and your health insurance this may be cheaper than an in-office therapist. My insurance in America had me pay $20-30 per in-office visit. In a month I would pay a total of anything between $20-120. The other unique aspect of this is that you have regular daily contact with your therapist. In my experience, an in-person therapist will see you once a week at most (unless there are extenuating circumstances) and probably closer to once a month later on in your therapy. This option is also helpful to those that travel a lot or are in a rural area that is far from a therapist. If an online therapist is something that you are uncomfortable with, they also offer a therapist search engine that will help you find a therapist close to you.

Though something to consider when reaching out to these therapists, is that they are not psychiatrists. That means that they cannot prescribe medication. However they will discuss your feelings about medication should they think you might need them.
